The Desk Trap

If you’re someone who spends the majority of their day working in one spot, you probably already know the immense stress it can have on your mind and body.

Even if you have absolutely nothing planned, it can still be tough to fully transition into off-mode” and leave your “work brain” behind after signing off, which is exactly why experts suggest doing a few small things for yourself in order to reset, recover and refresh for your evening ahead.

1. Separate yourself from your workspace

Whether you’re working from home or in an office, it’s crucial to create a buffer between your work and leisure spaces. While your commute home can naturally fulfil this for those who are office based, you may need to be more creative in setting that boundary if you’re are not.  Maybe you decide to put your laptop in a separate room or turn your Slack to “Do Not Disturb” - whatever it is, make sure that you’re intentional about leaving work where work is meant to be.

2. Make time for movement

Even if it's only 20 minutes or a few simple stretches, making time to move your body is a great way to help prevent any stiffness and get the blood flowing back to your muscles after sitting all day. Or better yet, take the movement outside where you can properly reap the restorative benefits of fresh air and sunlight too.

3. Use water as a “pattern interrupter”

A “pattern interrupter” is what some might describe as a quick practice to let your mind know when it’s time to transition between activities. After singularly focusing on work for a few hours straight, doing something completely different can help your modes to shift.  Try something as simple as jumping in the shower or splashing your face with cold water to immediately stimulate and reset your nervous system.

4. Shake off the stress with mindfulness

Micro-meditations or breathwork exercises are a great tool for helping you mentally remove yourself from thinking about work and turn your attention to the present moment instead. If you’re looking for inspiration, our Sudor trainers are a great place to start with countless options for you to choose from, no matter your preference or level of experience.

No time to meditate? Checking in with yourself is just as effective - considering how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally in order to prioritise what you need to do in that moment to decompress.
