How to reduce your carbon footprint while working out

A new study reveals that the profound heat waves enveloping the world this month bear the unmistakable marks of climate change. Scientists say that the lethal periods of extreme heat experienced in the American Southwest and Southern Europe would not have been possible without the ongoing accumulation of buildup of warming gases in the air.

Temperatures have skyrocketed to 45 degrees Celsius -- or 113 degrees Fahrenheit -- in some regions, prompting heat alerts, wildfires and heat-related hospital admissions and deaths. Because these heat events are expected to become more frequent, the need for humans to adapt and increase greenhouse gas mitigation efforts is vital, the researchers said.

What about your workout, is it possible to do right by your body while also doing right by the planet? Yes! Here are some ways that you can help to decrease greenhouse gases:

Practice Active Transportation

Whenever possible, walk, bike, or use public transportation to get to your workout location or gym. Carpooling is also an idea, plus you get to workout with your friends. Or maybe make your commute your workout by walking or cycling to work!

Exercise Outdoors

Working out in the gym means you are using the air-conditioned space, treadmills and machines that rely on power to run. Not to mention all the lights… So why not just work out in your home or outside with natural ventilation.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Is it really necessary to keep on buying water bottles? Do you need to use a different gym outfit every time? Of course sweaty gear needs to be washed, but try to keep your washing to a minimum.

Create your own weights from used plastic bottles that you fill with soil or water. Or maybe an old car tire? Get creative!

Take short showers

Again we don’t need to stay sweaty, but think twice before taking extremely long showers. Plus try a cold shower, some research suggests taking a frigid shower may also reduce muscle soreness, accelerate recovery, reduce inflammation, and boost metabolism.

Eat less meat

Before and after a workout, protein is a must. But producing meat is one of the biggest contributors to CO2 emissions. Try using plant based protein in your shakes and smoothies, or even a raw egg.

By adopting these eco-friendly practices, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint while staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Every small step counts toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious workout routine. So let’s try our best at reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and stopping the ever increasing heat wave!
